New Year's Message From Güler Sabancı, Chairman Of Sabancı Holding

Güler Sabancı, Chairman of Sabancı Holding, released a new year's message for the employees of the Sabancı Group. Sabancı made assessments for 2016 and expressed her expectations from 2017 in her message.

Güler Sabancı's message:

"Once again, we are leaving behind a year. 2016 was a year of challenges, changes, and global historic moments.

2016 was a year that significant changes were experienced in the world following the elections in the US, the Brexit, the refugee crisis, conflicts in Syria, terror attacks and other developments in our region, and uncertainties increasingly continued.

2016 displayed a picture of low commodity prices, low interest rates, low trade volume and low growth rate in terms of economy. IMF foresees that the low growth will continue for at least another 3 years.

While identifying the "new normal" in economics in such terms, it's too early to completely understand and read the changes and challenges beyond the borders of Turkey. However, some developments have already started influencing our lives.

Rapid solutions enabled by modern information technologies redefine the speed expectations of people in every field. People are increasingly demanding more speed and comfort day by day. On one hand, driverless vehicles have come into our lives; and on the other hand, problems such as income inequalities and unemployment experienced in many countries affect people deeply.

Even though Turkish economy shrunk in Q3, it showed a positive progress staying out of the general stagnancy experienced in global economy.

The coup attempt on July 15th was undoubtedly the most important incident we have experienced as a country in 2016.

It was the first time our country has passed through such an internal threat throughout its history and it dragged us to the edge of the cliff. Our people wholeheartedly embraced democracy on the face of the failed coup attempt targeting our future, and therefore, a milestone was experienced in Turkey.

In this process, we once again remembered the importance that strong steps should be taken on issues such as the rule of law, human rights, and the consolidation of our cultures with our differences. We will be supporting all steps to be taken to improve these issues in the upcoming period.

Terrorism stands at the top of the country's agenda and we must fight against this threat determinedly. However, we must not forget that we have to use every opportunity to restore social peace as well as these struggles. We lost many citizens during the terrorist attacks in 2016; many policemen and soldiers were martyred. We all felt deep sorrow for these griefs. Our wish is to leave all such griefs behind with the end of 2016.

We have always worked by aiming at more for our country with the responsibility of being the Sabancı of Turkey for more than 90 years. We believe that our country and our people always deserve the best.

Despite all challenges, we have experienced in 2016, Sabancı Group left behind a successful year thanks to your devoted efforts.

We took considerable steps not only for Sabancı Group, but also for the development of our country.

We have activated Tufanbeyli Power Plant, the largest lignite power plant built with advanced and eco-friendly technology by the private sector in Turkey.

We have created the first and much-needed model in Turkey for the cooperation of university and industry. We have opened the Composite Technologies Center of Excellence established under the leadership of Kordsa and Sabancı University.

We have accomplished the first 100% domestic electric bus of Turkey with the cooperation of Temsa and Aselsan.

We have added our products to the mortar of the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, specially manufactured for this project by Akçansa.

Our companies have received many awards in the fields of innovation and technology. Our companies have made a difference in sustainability as well.

We have accomplished many more successful projects I couldn't count here.

We wish 2017 to be the year that terrorism will end; the rule of law, democracy and universal values will prevail; the reforms needed in every field, especially in education, will accelerate; and we will come closer to the norms of contemporary civilization and get over every challenge as by being "we".

As always, Sabancı Group will maintain its constructiveness and endeavor to produce permanent values to make these wishes come true."
