Sakıp Sabancı Museum (SSM) of the Sabancı University is preparing to host the comprehensive “Russian Avant-Garde. Imagination of Future with Art and Design” exhibition, which represents the art and design of the Russian Avant-Garde with over 500 works of art starting from 18.10.2018.

The “Russian Avant-Garde. Imagination of Future with Art and Design” exhibition, which will open its doors on 18.10.2018 with the contribution of Sabancı Holding, will represent the rich position of the Russian Avant-Garde, accelerated and shaped with the milestones of Russia and the world’s history at the beginning of the 20th century, with a comprehensive selection of works.

Within the scope of the exhibition to be held in the Sakıp Sabancı Museum, the Russian Avant-Garde, which has an authentic position owing to its different relationship with the development line and avant-garde movements of Western art, will be represented by over 500 works of art reflecting this period. The exhibition whose art management is undertaken by Ms. Dr. Nazan Ölçer, the Manager of the Sakıp Sabancı Museum, will be organised under the curatorship of Ms. Maria Tsantanoglou, the Manager of the Thessalonica State Modern Art Museum and the George Costakis Collection. Following the path adopted by the Russian Avant-Garde from 1900s to the end of 1930s it will bring together the works of art of the determinant figures of the period, including Kazimir Maleviç, Vladimir Tatlin, Vasili Kandinski, Olga Rosanova and Liubov Popova.

The foundation of the “Russian Avant-Garde. Imagination of Future with Art and Design” will be laid by the George Costakis collection, with 375 works of art which are hosted by Thessalonica State Modern Art Museum. This is one of the most comprehensive current collections and archives of the Russian Avant-Garde in the world. The exhibition will also contain work pieces which are borrowed from recognised special collections of Europe and from the Russian Decorative, Applied and Folk Arts Museum with its post Revolution porcelain collection. Involving patterns, porcelains and metal objects as well as laces and clothing designs, this selection will reveal the scope of the ideal of the Russian Avant-Garde related to the reorganisation of life and the history of its relationship with folk art.

The transforming effect of the Russian Avant-Garde on the cultural atmosphere of the period will be reflected with the works of art, as well as magnificent constructions and revivals. The theatre scenes, which are indicated by many art historians as the place where the Russian Avant-Garde was discovered, will be revived in the Sakıp Sabancı Museum.

The catalogue to be published within the scope of the “Russian Avant-Garde. Imagination of Future with Art and Design” will be one of the basic guidelines written by Mr. Prof. Dr. Hilal Berktay, a historian, Ms. Maria Tsantsanoglou, the curator of the exhibition, Mr. Norman Rosenthal, the Manager of Old Exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Art, Mr. Marcus Müller, the manager of Münster, Picasso Museum, Ms. Aleki Costakis, Board Member of the Thessalonica Modern Art Museum and daughter of Mr. George Costakis and a team from the Russia Decorative, Applied and Folk Arts Museum with text related to the cultural environment, diversity and political climate, which made the Russian Avant-Garde possible.

The production of the Russian Avant-Garde in different disciplines will be depicted in detail through movie screenings, music concerts, literature events and workshops for children and adults during the exhibition.
